You would need about 150 amps to get a 6 volt drop across 40 feet of #10
wire. Six volts divided by ( ohms per foot times 40 feet).

Try putting a capacitor across the meter leads. If you see a significant
drop in the indicated current there may be a large high frequency
component that is fooling the meter.
