Thanks for your help. Actually we did have one of those non vented
propane heaters and maybe we just had a bad one but it kept setting
off the smoke alarms unless we used it on a low setting, but even on a
low setting it did provide decent heat. We didn't test it in the
middle of the winter but in the fall it did a good job, we were
selling the house and we had propane but no oil so we used the propane
heater. They were very clear about not using it in a bedroom. I
never have researched propane heaters that do not require electricity
that are vented, probably worth a look.
