We didn't find any cat food around the house until a week or two after
the initial supply of mice ran out. The previous owners of the house
had let it become thoroughly infested, so our cat found himself with a
plentiful supply.

I had never observed or heard of cats deliberately leaving bait to
attract prey, but your observations and mine show that it definitely
does happen. Is it documented anywhere? And do any other animals do it?
