A well documented natural phenomenon is when a very high energy photon (>2
MeV) passes close to a heavy atomic nucleus such as lead. The photon
spontaneously 'decays' into an electron and a positron. When done in a test
chamber, the two particle tracks have been observed. Under a magnetic
field, the two spiral away in opposite circles since the positron has a
positive charge.

The phenomenon is called 'pair production' and is well studied.
